Wing Nuts
A wing nut or a butterfly nut consists of two
large metal “wings”
, one on each side. These
wings are applied for easy tightening and
loosening using hands, without using tools.
The benefit of wing nut is its more ergonomic
design which has two tabs that look like
wings. It makes it easier to install and remove.
Application:
- Wing nuts were used in the bicycle wheels for easy
tightening and loosening for maintenance. It is still
used in drums for the tightening and loosening of the
suspended cymbal.

These nuts are slotted to receive a cotter pin or wire
which passes through a drilled hole in the bolt and
locks it. In assembly the nuts are torqued to preload
value, then the nut position is adjusted to line up the
slots with the hole in the bolt.
